Commodore center fielder Johnny Norwood hit a dramatic eighth-inning home run and propelled Vanderbilt to its first men's national championship with a 3-2 victory over Virginia Wednesday night in a winner-take-all contest at TD Ameritrade Park in the College World Series.
With the score tied at 2, Norwood turned on a 1-0 pitch from Cavalier closer Nick Howard (L, 2-2) and deposited it into the left field bullpen to give Vanderbilt the deciding margin.
Hayden Stone got the win for Vanderbilt after pitching one and two-thirds innings, giving up two hits and no earned runs. Adam Ravenelle pitched the final two innings for the save. Carson Fulmer started the game and gave the Commodores five and one-third innings of courageous baseball after coming back on three days rest.
Norwood went 3-for-3 to lead the Commodores, with Dansby Swanson also adding two hits.
